Why We Don’t Recommend Rug Protection Treatments
We’re often asked about stain protectors, UV coatings, and other “rug protection” sprays.
We don’t use them—and we don’t recommend them.

Here’s Why
Most protection products are chemical-based coatings. Whether they claim to prevent spills, block UV rays, or resist wear, the truth is the same: these treatments are not safe—for your rug, your home, or your family.

No chemical protectant is truly safe for pets, children, or people.
These products release fumes, leave residue, and often contain compounds that can irritate skin, lungs, or trigger allergic reactions. Many are untested on natural fibers like wool and silk, and some have even been banned from use on household furnishings in certain regions.
Rugs are meant to be touched, walked on, and lived with. Coating them with chemicals to protect them defeats the purpose—and risks your family’s health along the way.
What These Treatments Really Do
-
Form a surface layer that breaks down quickly
-
Attract dirt once the coating starts to fail
-
Cause discoloration, yellowing, or texture changes
-
Interfere with future cleanings and deep washing
-
Create barriers that trap moisture rather than block it
-
Introduce harmful substances into your living space

Even if a label says “non-toxic,” that doesn’t mean safe—especially when it’s applied to a textile you walk on barefoot or that pets may lie on.

Safer, Smarter Alternatives
Concern: Stains, Spills, or Pet Accidents

Why we don’t recommend stain guard products:
They coat the rug’s fibers with chemicals that wear off unevenly and are unsafe to inhale or touch. Better solution: Use a high-quality rug pad with a moisture barrier to protect your floors from pet accidents or spills Blot spills immediately with a clean towel—never rub Bring rugs to us for deep, chemical-free hand cleaning if a pet accident happens Avoid using store-bought cleaners, sprays, or foams—they can cause permanent fiber damage
Concern: Fading from Sunlight
Why we don’t use UV coatings:
These are typically sprayed on and loaded with synthetic compounds that don’t last—and may harm rug fibers or cause health concerns in enclosed spaces.

Better solutions:
-
Rotate your rug regularly to balance sun exposure
-
Use UV-filtering window film or sheers to reduce direct sunlight
-
Place a lightweight throw or mat over sun-heavy areas if needed
-
If fading has already occurred, we can color-match and restore affected areas by hand

Concern: Foot Traffic and Wear
Why we don’t apply fiber-sealants or “rug armor” products:
These coatings create an artificial finish, can stiffen or damage the texture of natural wool, and may release fumes over time.

Better solution:
-
Use a felt rug pad to absorb pressure and reduce impact
-
Shift furniture or rug placement seasonally to prevent localized wear
-
Clean your rug regularly to remove dirt and grit that wear down fibers
-
For thinning or fraying areas, we offer binding, edging, and repair services
